Writing Frameworks

"But it is a long way to the Emerald City, and it will take you many days. The country here is rich and pleasant, but you must pass through rough and dangerous places before you reach the end of your journey."

Teaching writing can often feel like that journey to the Emerald City - there is something wonderful awaiting you when you get there, but there are many bumps along the way. Creating writers means providing them with a framework to talk about their writing. Using the 6 Traits (or 6 + 1 Traits) provides teachers and students with a common language to work with improving writing. Many districts also adopt writing programs (Step Up to Writing) which can easily fit into the traits framework.

The purpose of this space is to share what teachers are doing in teaching writing in order to gain tools for our instructional tool bag and produce great writers. This wiki is a companion to the Writing Frameworks blog which discusses the journey of teaching writing.

And so.....a little humor on teaching writing can be found in this article from Karen Brown about the "rules" in a writing clasroom as we begin our journey.
